Do you feel pain when enjoying your favourite ice cream or taking a sip of hot coffee? If so, you’re not alone.

Sensitive teeth are a common dental issue that affects millions of people worldwide. But what causes this discomfort, and more importantly, what can you do about it?

Causes of Sensitive Teeth

Tooth Enamel Erosion: The outer layer of your teeth, known as enamel, protects the sensitive nerves inside. When enamel wears down due to factors like acidic foods, aggressive brushing or teeth grinding, it exposes the nerves, leading to sensitivity.

Gum Recession: Receding gums expose the roots of your teeth, which are not covered by enamel. This exposes the dentine, a softer tissue containing nerve endings. Without the protection of enamel, sensations such as temperature changes or pressure can cause discomfort.

Cavities and Tooth Decay: Holes in your teeth caused by decay allow irritants to reach the nerves, resulting in sensitivity. Tooth decay weakens the structure of the tooth and can lead to further complications if left untreated.

Cracked or Fractured Teeth: Cracks or fractures in teeth can extend to the nerves, causing sensitivity to temperature and pressure. This can occur due to trauma, teeth grinding or biting down on hard objects.

Dental Procedures: Some dental treatments, such as teeth whitening, tooth restoration, or orthodontic procedures, can cause temporary sensitivity. This usually subsides after a few days but may require special care in the meantime.

Acidic Foods and Beverages: Consuming acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus fruits, fizzy drinks or wine, can erode enamel over time, leading to sensitivity.

Solutions for Sensitive Teeth

Desensitising Toothpaste: Specialised toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth contains compounds that block the sensation from reaching the nerves. Regular use can help alleviate sensitivity over time.

Fluoride: Fluoride strengthens enamel and can help repair minor enamel damage. If you’re struggling with sensitivity, we may recommend fluoride treatments or fluoride toothpaste to help reduce sensitivity.

Gentle Brushing: Aggressive brushing can wear down enamel and contribute to sensitivity. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions to clean your teeth effectively without causing further damage.

Avoid Acidic Foods and Drinks: Limiting your intake of acidic foods and drinks can help preserve enamel and reduce sensitivity. If you do consume acidic food and drink, rinse your mouth with water afterwards to neutralise the acids. Chewing sugar-free gum and even eating cheese can also help to neutralise acid.

Use a Mouthguard: If you grind your teeth at night, wearing a mouthguard can protect your teeth from damage and reduce sensitivity caused by grinding.

Regular Dental Checkups: Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can identify and address any dental issues early on, preventing them from worsening and causing sensitivity.

Dental Procedures: If sensitivity is caused by issues such as cavities, cracked teeth or gum disease, your dentist can recommend appropriate treatments to address the underlying problem.

Changes in Diet and Lifestyle: Adopting a balanced diet rich in calcium and avoiding habits like smoking can promote overall dental health and reduce sensitivity.
